Original from the warm Mediterranean regions in the Middle Ages, this precious variety found an extremely favourable environment in Western Liguria.
The right climate and a favourable geography, along with the religious orders devoted to a careful cultivation of the plants, and a peculiar social and economic fabric, helped spread this fine wine, and export it in many Italian and European areas, with the nick-name “Wine of the Popes” , due to its excellence.
Present on the tables and banquets of aristocrats and nobleman, the fine and much appreciated Moscatello di Taggia was strongly affected by the growing expansion of olive cultivation in the same territory, and by the diffusion of more sophisticated wine growing techniques in competing areas. At the end of the 1800, the epidemic of phylloxera eradicated the few plants that were left, and permanently oriented the small wine cultivations toward other varieties.
Moscatello di Taggia was just glorious memory, until, in 2003, the unwavering passion of a group of experts, after many researches, led to the discovery and the reproduction of the plant. It was an immediate success, certified by a strong enthusiasm toward a product that, with its complex and magnificent history, captures the essence of our territory.
